Economic Value of Groundwater in the High Plains Aquifer Region

K-State agricultural economists Nathan Hendricks and Gabe Sampson report on their new analysis of the value of groundwater in the High Plains Aquifer region...they used land transaction data and cropland rental rate trends to determine the economic importance of those groundwater resources to Kansas agriculture...they also looked at the impact of changes in the aquifer's water level on farmland values in the region.

K-State risk management specialist Jenny Ifft looks at the prospect of adding either the Supplemental Coverage Option or Enhanced Coverage Option, or both, to one's 2022 spring-planted crop insurance policy, and what historical trends suggest about the payoff from these coverage add-ons. She also focuses on hedging in the futures and options markets.

New Crop Insurance Add-On Coverage

Risk management specialist Jenny Ifft and crop nutrient specialist Dorivar Ruiz-Diaz of K-State talk about new crop insurance add-on coverage of post-planting nitrogen applications to dryland corn, which will be available on a pilot basis in 10 northeast Kansas counties this year...they explain why this insurance option has been developed, saying it may be the first of several "targeted" crop insurance endorsements for specific production practices.

The director of the Arthur Capper Cooperative Center at K-State, Brian Briggeman, digs into a new analysis his center just finished, which looked at the soaring fertilizer price situation and how it's affecting the financial state of farm cooperatives. He talks about the data he used from the last time fertilizer prices spiked, and then plummeted, in the late 2000s as a benchmark for assessing the current financial vulnerability of various-sized cooperatives.

K-State farm management economist Gregg Ibendahl shares his just-released estimate on Kansas net farm income for 2021, as well as his income projection for 2022, using Kansas Farm Management Association grain farm data as the basis for his calculations...he points to a sharp rise in the average income this past year, followed by an expected and significant drop this year.
